Designed as a replacement home for a family of four, the house is positioned in the back garden of the existing family cottage on the outskirts of a Warwickshire village, overlooking the River Avon.
The new home is set deep into a rising bank, with a semi-buried entrance storey accommodating the primary functional spaces. Living accommodation is located on the first floor, opening onto a series of terraced grounds.
Surrounded by rolling countryside and situated within a rural farming community, the building adopts a modern interpretation of the local agricultural aesthetic. Three burnt-larch timber sheds, linked by glazed elements, sit proudly over the landscape.
The lower ground floor is cut into the hillside, with contrasting fenestration and materials designed to give the impression of the building being carved from its setting. Externally, the design incorporates specialist Petersen D81 brick, its colour and laying pattern forming a contemporary response to the village’s Lias stone vernacular.
