Commissioned to redevelop the existing site on the edge of the Conservation Area in Stratford-upon-Avon, this project sits in the historic area of Old Town. The proposal introduced two new dwellings with innovative designs and contemporary forms, using modern detailing and spatial arrangements to create homes suited to current living requirements.
The homes share a common materiality and architectural language, while variations in scale and detailing give each property its own distinct identity.
Cast stone at the base and blue Lias stone to the ground-floor walls provide a sense of solidity. Using a material found in boundary walls rather than traditional elevational treatments helps to root the buildings within the landscape, while the use of large-format cast stone offers a contemporary interpretation.
The golden-hued metal cladding draws inspiration from the warm limestone used extensively on nearby Holy Trinity Church. Introducing a new material also reinforces a clear architectural chronology, ensuring the dwellings are recognisably of their time and place.
