Appointed to review this beautiful building, dating back to the 1800s but poorly refurbished into a 1980s office and in urgent need of care and attention, the brief was to reimagine its future use following the client’s purchase of the site.
The former working mill, set on the frequently flooding River Alne, was reviewed with a view to fully repairing and refurbishing the building to A-grade office space for St Francis Group, one of the UK's leading regeneration specialists and an expert in brownfield development.
The project required significant flood-resilience and flood-proofing measures, alongside the sensitive integration of new services and infrastructure to meet modern A-grade office standards.
Significant research, innovation and expertise were utilised to achieve this while maintaining the unique aspects of the historic core, including a new steel staircase that winds through the building — weaving through the structure and uniting the historic timber fabric with the modern interventions.
