The Spinney

Welford-on-Avon

Client:  Private

Contract: SFA 2012

Role: Architect RIBA, Work Stages 0 – 6

Studio Spicer Architects was commissioned, late 2016, to analyse a vacant site in the Warwickshire village of Welford-on-Avon, with a view to providing a new home for the client.

The site, which benefits from extant permission, sits at the heart of the village, within a Conservation Area.  There is a public footpath running in front of the site, with views of the church and beyond.  A delicate approach to the development of the site and new building design is required, to protect these views and preserve the character and appearance of the general area.

The new dwelling is conceived over a single storey, comprising two wings, adjoined by a low, flat-roofed, linking structure.

The materials, which include Lias stone, red brick, timber cladding and slate, are reflective of the village, without being pastiche.

The unique approach to the layout has created a large, open-plan family house, incorporating modern living, within a traditional context.

Completion summer 2018.
